Alfredo Morelos of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers avoided a retrospective ban this week.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers arrives prior to the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League between Celtic and at Ibrox Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Derek Johnstone has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Kirk Broadfoot’s attempt to antagonise Rangers hitman Alfredo Morelos is among the worst things he’s witnessed in football.

Broadfoot and the Rangers star were involved in a physical altercation last week when walking off the pitch for half-time during Kilmarnock’s trip to Ibrox.

The Scottish defender appeared to purposely stand on Morelos’s heel, prompting a furious response from the Colombian striker.

Morelos avoided a retrospective ban for his reaction to the incident, which Johnstone says was a ‘cowardly’ thing to do by Broadfoot.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “The game had stopped, it was half-time. You are relaxing a wee bit and your mind is starting to think about the second half as you are walking off the park, and then all of a sudden, you feel the studs going down the back of your Achilles. That is a bloody sore thing.

“I have seen a lot of cowardly things on a football field, but that is right up there with the worst of them. To do that when a man’s back to you is ridiculous.”

It would’ve been ludicrous to ban Morelos without banning Broadfoot, but it’s another example of how easy it is to wind up the Rangers hitman.

You could say any player would’ve been angry with Broadfoot, which is true, but not every player would have reacted in the same way as the Gers striker and this is, well, his Achilles heel.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.
