Glasgow Rangers legend Derek Johnstone feels that at least one goalkeeper must leave Ibrox this summer.

Derek Johnstone has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers’ third-choice goalkeeper next season should leave the club instead of staying to simply collect a wage every week.

Rangers signed Allan McGregor at the beginning of the summer in a move which affected Jak Alnwick and Wes Foderingham’s playing time.

Foderingham has been the Gers’ first-choice keeper for three years, but The Scottish Sun revealed earlier this week that the 27-year-old would be behind McGregor and Alnwick in Steven Gerrard’s pecking order unless he left Ibrox this summer.

Johnstone, who enjoyed two separate spells at Rangers, feels that something has to give and believes that the keeper who is being excluded from regular matchday squads on a weekly basis – which, according to The Scottish Sun, will be Foderingham – ought to pack his bags.

“Steven has three good goalies to choose from at present but you can’t have someone who feels they should be playing first team football sitting out and just hoping for an injury to give them a chance to play,” he told The Glasgow Evening Times.

“Someone has to go, it is as simple as that. If I am the third choice keeper and I know I’m not going to be involved then I’m looking to move on and play every week rather than just picking up my wages.”

If the report is true, it’s a brave move by Gerrard. Foderingham is probably the better option than Alnwick and therefore you wonder if forcing out the former Swindon Town stopper represents something of a risk by the legendary midfielder, but time will tell.
