Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been linked with moves away Ibrox, but should Gers manager Steven Gerrard keep him?

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers is seen prior to the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that new Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard should keep Alfredo Morelos if the Gers striker wants to stay.

Morelos has been linked with moves away from Rangers in the summer transfer window, with The Daily Mail reporting that clubs in Turkey, China and France are interested in a £6 million deal for the Ibrox striker.

The Daily Mail has also claimed that Rangers turned down a bid of £8m from Chinese side Beijing Renhe this past season.

Rangers legend Johnstone, who had two separate spells at Ibrox, has suggested that new manager and Liverpool legend Gerrard should keep hold of the youngster this summer if he wants to remain at the Glasgow giants.

The former Scotland international has also pointed out that Morelos is only 21 years of age, which people tend to forget.

Johnstone wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times: “If Morelos says to Steven that he wants to be part of his plans, that he is looking forward to working under him and that he is ready to play for him, then he stays and he looks to improve from his first season at Ibrox.

“Anything other than that, he goes. If he has to tell the manager he wants to be here, he will concentrate and work hard and if he does that then he stays and Steven looks to bring in a player to work with him.”

“People forget that Morelos is 21. He is not 25, 26 and a player that has gained a lot of experience in the game,” added Johnstone.

“He is still learning his way and for him to come in and score as many goals as he did, and put in some of the performances he did, last season says a lot about him.”

Quality footballer

Morelos may not have turned on the style in the final months of the past season, but overall the striker’s performances were very good.

The 21-year-old Colombian striker scored 14 goals and provided six assists in 35 Scottish Premiership matches during the 2018-19 campaign, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
