Graeme Murty’s Rangers future in the Ibrox dugout remains in doubt.
Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has told Open Goal’s Youtube channel that he would get rid of Graeme Murty and bring back Ibrox legends Graeme Souness and Walter Smith as a double act.
Doubts continue to cloud Murty’s tenure in charge at Ibrox as he remains in the job until the end of the season, but there has been no hint as to whether the 43-year-old will continue in charge.
The former Reading defender has excelled as Rangers manager, closing the gap between the Gers and Old Firm rivals Celtic as well as guiding his side to second in the league.
Ferguson praised Murty for his work but believes he would fail to attract a certain standard of player, like Brendan Rodgers does at Celtic. He believes combining Smith and Souness is the best possible avenue for Rangers.
“What he [Murty] has done in the short-term has been brilliant,” Ferguson said. “But I don’t think he should get the job in the long-term. I would love to see a certain Mr Smith and a certain Mr Souness back at the club.
“In the backroom staff they have [Peter] Lovenkrands, [Jonatan] Johansson and Kevin Thomson, working behind the scenes. A lot of good young coaches, who can take the sessions. They [Smith and Souness] need to manage.
“It’s about attracting players for me. Rodgers will attract a certain type of player, would Murty do that? I’m not so sure. But if you had a Smith or a Souness, wow. You’d want to go to Rangers.”
Souness has not returned to management since leaving Premier League side Newcastle United in 2006, while Smith has also been without a club since leaving the Gers in 2011.
Murty could take a huge step to securing his future as Rangers manager with a win over Celtic on Sunday afternoon, as the Gers go up against the Hoops in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
