Jermain Defoe is on loan at Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers now.

Former Ibrox midfielder Derek Ferguson has suggested on Open Goal that he would like to see Rangers striker Jermain Defoe stay part of manager Steven Gerrard’s side next season.

Defoe joined Rangers on an 18-month loan deal from Bournemouth in the Premier League in the January transfer window.

The former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur striker recently told The Scottish Sun that Bournemouth can recall him from his loan spell at Rangers in the summer transfer window and then in January 2020.

Former Rangers midfielder Ferguson believes that it would be better for Gerrard’s team if Defoe is at Ibrox next season.

Ferguson said on Open Goal regarding Defoe staying at Rangers next season: “Why not? Because it’s not just what he is doing on the park, it’s what he is doing in the dressing room, on the training field. He is fit as a fiddle, still working at his game, that’s what you need.”

Defoe has made six starts and six substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers so far this season, scoring six goals in the process, according to WhoScored.

Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 66 points from 33 matches, as many as 11 points behind leaders and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.
