Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has told William Hill’s Open Goal that younger brother Barry would have been one of his suggestions to replace Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox, before Graeme Murty was given the job until the end of the season.

Murty was given the job until the end of the 2017-18 campaign on Friday, after taking charge of the Gers for their last nine games following Caixinha’s sacking.

But Ferguson believes his little brother Barry, 39, would have done a good job, as well as stating that he was an advocate of Derek McInnes before he decided to remain with Aberdeen.

Blackpool manager Barry Ferguson looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Blackpool and Charlton Athletic at Bloomfield Road on May 03, 2014 in Blackpool, England.

Ferguson stated that he wants to see someone with experience get the job who has been at Rangers in some capacity in the past, before predicting Saturday’s clash away at Rugby Park to be a 2-2 draw.

“There’s been a few names, I was one of the names that wanted Derek McInnes to get the job,” Ferguson said. “As well, I thought my wee brother might have had the opportunity to get himself on board.

“He missed the vote under Pedro Caixinha, he didn’t think he was going to be a good enough number three. I don’t agree, but they need someone that has been there, somebody that’s done it, somebody experienced.

“Watched Killie against Partick Thistle; fantastic. A great win last week, they won it in a different manner. I think that might be a draw, something like a two each.”

Rangers interim manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and St Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium on December 16, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Murty prepares his side with the hope of bouncing back after a disappointing 3-1 loss to St. Johnstone last time out at Ibrox, previously winning four games on the spin against Ross County, Hibernian and Aberdeen twice.

The Gers must beat Kilmarnock if they are to push themselves into a potential Scottish Premiership title race, with Aberdeen facing Celtic on Saturday.

Older brother Ferguson played for the Gers for seven years between 1983 and 1990 after coming through the ranks at Ibrox, helping the club win the Scottish Premiership on two occasions.
