Ibrox side Rangers have a gem in Barrie McKay if they let him off the leash, says Derek Ferguson.
Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Rangers legend Derek Ferguson has said that he wants to see Barrie McKay “let off the leash” next season.
The 21-year-old midfielder is one of Rangers most talented players, but his mettle will be tested next season as the Gers prepare for their Scottish Premiership return.
But if his performance in Rangers Scottish Cup semi-final victory over Celtic is anything to go by then the youngster might be alright.
In extra time, McKay sent the blue half of Hampden Park wild with a stunning long-range effort which beat Celtic stopper Craig Gordon, enhancing his reputation as a scorer of some superb goals.
The young Scot, who registered 10 goals and 12 assists in Rangers’ double-winning campaign this past season, was on international duty on Saturday night in Scotland’s 3-0 defeat by Euro 2016 host nation France, earning a seven-minute cameo.
He impressed, however, on his Scotland bow, and Ferguson, who spent seven years with the Gers, wants to see manager Mark Warburton let his man off the leash next term.
“McKay has got that flair that we sadly lack at the moment. I wish Rangers would let him off the leash a little bit because he has got plenty of ability”, he said to BBC Radio Scotland.
