Neil Lennon’s Celtic lost to CFR Cluj on Tuesday.
The former Rangers midfielder believes that midfielder Callum McGregor should not have been deployed at left-back at Celtic Park.
McGregor is a midfielder, but he played at left-back for Celtic against Cluj, with Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo left on the substitutes’ bench.
The Hoops lost the second leg of the Champions League Qualifying Third Round tie 4-3 on Tuesday evening to go out 5-4 on aggregate.
Former Rangers star Ferguson believes that Lennon was wrong to play McGregor at left-back and not in his natural position of midfield.
Ferguson said on Open Goal about McGregor: “I think he is Celtic’s best player, so why do you take somebody with that capability, the way he supplies ammunition for the front boys? When you take that away from the midfield, you are asking for trouble.”
Moving on
Celtic will be bitterly disappointed that they will not be in the Champions League group stage for the second season in a row.
The Hoops have to move on now and have to focus on getting through to the group stage of the Europa League.
Celtic will take on Dunfermline at Celtic Park in the second round of the Scottish League Cup this afternoon.
