Rangers are set to announce Steven Gerrard as their new manager at Ibrox.

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has told Open Goal’s Youtube channel that he would back the appointment of Gary McAllister as assistant manager, but believes Graeme Souness would be a better option.
Gerrard, 37, is set to sign a three-year deal at Rangers to replace Graeme Murty on Friday afternoon, with Gary McAllister reportedly expected to become his assistant at Ibrox.
The Gers decided to end Murty’s stay at Rangers after losing 5-0 to Celtic last Sunday, which saw the Hoops hold aloft their seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

Ferguson has backed the appointment of McAllister, who has 59 caps with Scotland, but believes former Rangers boss Souness would be a better candidate to help Gerrard ease into life as a manager.
“Top draw”, Ferguson said, when asked about McAllister. “He’s a class act, I think you need that in the dressing room. A lovely guy but like Gerrard, he has an edge to him. I’d still like to see an older, experienced man like Graeme Souness.
“I saw a bit of fire in his belly when he was talking about Arsenal, he could see the mad eyes come into it. But that’s what they need.”

Souness has gone into punditry with Sky Sports after his last spell in management with Newcastle, which ended in 2006. He managed the Gers for five years between 1986 and 1991, after a five-year spell as a player.
It remains to be seen if McAllister will indeed be named as Rangers assistant manager alongside Gerrard.
