Rangers icon Ferguson believes Robertson should have been signed six years ago.

Derek Ferguson has told Open Goal’s ‘Right In The Coupon’ that he was baffled that Rangers did not consider signing Andy Robertson during his time with Queen’s Park during the 2012-13 season.
Robertson, 24, has continued his meteoric rise in professional football by being named Scotland’s captain, after starring for current side Liverpool during the 2017-18 campaign in which he reached the Champions League final.
But it was very different for Robertson six years ago. Released by Celtic at Under-15 level, the Bhoys fan joined Queen’s Park in the summer of 2012 and starred in the Scottish Third Division. It saw Dundee United come calling.
Rangers played against Queen’s Park in the fourth tier of Scottish football during the 2012-13 season after their financial collapse, and Ferguson admits he was left “scratching his head” at Rangers overlooking Robertson.
“It’s brilliant he’s Scotland captain,” Ferguson said. “That young man has come so far in such a short space of time. I watched him, covering some games when he was at Queen’s Park. Him and [Blair] Spittal stood out like a sore thumb.
“I was always scratching my head why Rangers never went for him. I watched the four games Rangers played against Queen’s Park, and those two boys were outstanding. It was a no-brainer, you would have got him for nothing.
“He’s a stand-out at Liverpool. He’s one of the first names on their team sheet. It’s fantastic news for us certainly.”

After a year at Queen’s Park, Robertson was signed by Dundee United in the summer of 2013, before joining Hull City a season later. Three years later, Liverpool landed Robertson for a fee believed to be in the region of £10million (Mirror).
Now, Robertson is set to captain his first match with the armband as well as earning his 23rd cap for Scotland against Belgium at Hampden Park on Friday evening.
