Newly reappointed Derby County boss Steve McClaren made excellent use of the loan market during his first spell at the club.

Steve McClaren was reappointed Derby County manager last week, and the Rams supporters will be hoping he can replicate the fine work he did in the loan market during his first spell in charge of the club now he is back at the iPro stadium.

As this XI shows, Derby have brought in some excellent young players in recent years, both under McClaren and before his tenure. Of our Derby loanees XI, four have earned England call-ups since their time with the club and three have been capped.

All XI are currently playing in the top flight, 10 of those in the Premier League and one in the Austrian Bundesliga. The only player currently on-loan at Derby is James Wilson of Manchester United, the forward is yet to score for the Rams first team, although he has bagged in the much-maligned Checkatrade Trophy for Derby’s under-23’s.

Goalkeeper: Jack Butland

Now an England international, Jack Butland played 6 games for Derby on-loan from Stoke during the 2014/15 season. Highly rated from a young age, Butland has now established himself with the Potters and, although still only 23, he is already a regular member of the England squad.

Left-Back: Andre Wisdom

Predominantly a right-back, Andre Wisdom is capable of playing in either full-back position, and it is left-back that he is called upon for in our XI. The Liverpool defender is currently out on loan at Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg, where he has made 2 appearances to date.

Centre-Back: Michael Keane

A recent call up to the England squad was a mark of the progress Michael Keane has made in the last few years. A graduate of the Manchester United academy, Keane was loaned out 4 times by the Red Devils before really making his mark at Turf Moor.

Centre-Back: Daniel Ayala

Another central defender from a Premier League new-boy, Daniel Ayala played 17 games on-loan from Liverpool at Derby in 2011. The 25-year-old joined Middlesbrough in 2014, where he has become a key player, even winning the PFA Fans Player of the Year award in the Championship last season.

Right-Back: Adam Smith

In six years at Tottenham, Adam Smith made just 2 appearances, whilst being loaned out 7 times. His last loan move was to Derby in 2013, where he played 8 games, before joining Bournemouth on a permanent deal.

Promoted with the Cherries, Smith is now a regular starter in the Premier League for Eddie Howe’s men, and well worth his place in this XI ahead of competition such as Ryan Shotton.

Defensive Midfield: James Tomkins

Traditionally a centre-back, James Tomkins has also been utilised in a defensive midfield role over the course of his career, and due to the plethora of central defensive options, that’s where he features in our XI.

The 27-year-old joined Crystal Palace from West Ham for £10 million in the summer, a decision which has been criticised by many Hammers fans. Tomkins brief spell at Derby came when the defender was just 19 years old, and he made only 7 outings for the club.

Central Midfield: Tom Carroll

Tom Carroll made 27 appearances for Tottenham last season, and is clearly a man Mauricio Pochettino rates highly, as the Argentine has wasted no time in shipping out players he doesn’t deem to be good enough rather rapidly during his tenure as Spurs boss.

A classy midfield player who has won 17 caps for England under-21’s, Carroll played 12 times for Derby in 2012, scoring once, 1 of 4 loan moves he has had during his career.

Central Midfield: Jake Livermore

Another midfielder to have joined Derby on-loan from Tottenham is Jake Livermore. The once-capped England international made 16 appearances for the Rams in 2009 as a 19-year-old, and is now a key player for Hull City in the Premier League.

Left Wing: Jesse Lingard

England and Manchester United star Jesse Lingard has enjoyed a great deal of success since his loan spell at Derby in 2015, where he played 14 games and scored twice. He scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final last season and has earned a call up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad this season.

Centre-Forward: Patrick Bamford

Like most young Chelsea players, Patrick Bamford has been loaned out a number of times (six to be exact), and one of those was to Derby County. He scored 8 goals in 21 games for Derby, and won the Championship Player of the Year award on-loan at Middlesbrough the following season. Bamford is currently on-loan at Burnley.

Right Wing: Jordon Ibe

Currently winning a lot of plaudits at Bournemouth, Jordon Ibe was always touted for big things at Liverpool, but has ultimately had to leave the club to really kickstart his career. The 20-year-old scored 5 goals in 20 games and looked very impressive before being recalled from his loan at Derby in 2014/15. He has made 8 appearances for Bournemouth in the Premier League this season.
