The veteran English manager, also Lampard’s uncle, believes that a switch from Pride Park to Chelsea “is going to happen”.
Harry Redknapp has claimed to BBC Sport that Derby County manager Frank Lampard is unlikely to turn down the possibility of becoming Chelsea’s head coach in comments which will be a huge blow for the Rams fanbase.
In addition, Lampard’s uncle has disclosed how the Blues legend has a house “around the corner” from the Premier League club’s training ground, while his wife also works in London, making the prospect of a return to the capital enticing from a logistic and personal perspective too.
Lampard, who in his first season as Derby manager steered the Rams to the Championship playoff final, has long been linked with a switch to the dugout of his former club, with The Express saying the Pride Park outfit want £4million compensation for leaving with two years still on his contract.
With the Stamford Bridge managerial position now vacant following Maurizio Sarri’s move back to Italy with Serie A champions Juventus, speculation about Lampard’s future has intensified, and Redknapp believes that the opportunity for his nephew to manage the club where he holds legendary status “may not come along again”.
“If Chelsea come calling, it’s a difficult one for him to turn down,” Redknapp told BBC Radio 5 Live, as quoted by BBC Sport. “In my personal opinion, he’ll be the manager of Chelsea. It looks to me like it’s going to happen.
“He’s a true legend at Chelsea, one of the greatest players in the club’s history. It may not come along again, you never know in football, the opportunity is there for him to go back now. He has a house around the corner from the training ground, his wife works in London.”
Chelsea finished third in the Premier League last season and also won the Europa League.
