Derby fans react on Twitter to Wayne Rooney reports

A number of Derby County fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the reports that England legend Wayne Rooney could be in line to join the Rams as player-coach.

The 33-year-old striker, formerly on the books at Everton and Manchester United, still has over two seasons left on his contract with Major League Soccer side DC United.

According to BBC Sport, however, Derby owner Mel Morris feels that England’s all-time record goalscorer could prove a catalyst to finally get the Pride Park outfit back into the Premier League.

The report also suggests that talks have been held between the two parties and, although they do not know how close they are to reaching a successful conclusion, Derby are said to be “optimistic”.

Asked about the Rooney rumours after Monday’s Championship win at Huddersfield Town, Derby boss Phillip Cocu told BBC Radio Derby: “I can’t say anything about that. We’re working hard to complete the team and we always try to find the best player in a certain position.”

Two of Rooney’s former England teammates, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, were both at Derby last season, and it seems as though a third could soon be plying his trade – as well as continuing to learn the ropes in a new one – at Pride Park.
