A number of Derby County fans are calling for Dean Smith’s appointment as manager should Gary Rowett leave them for Stoke City.

Stoke are said to be in talks to appoint Rowett as Paul Lambert’s replacement, after making the Derby boss their number one target (Telegraph).

And while Rowett may have turned down the Potters at the start of the year, he could have more incentive to move after the Rams’ failure to gain promotion to the Premier League, which looks set to result in a reduced budget for next season.

If the 44-year-old is to leave Pride Park, Smith, the Brentford manager, could be a popular replacement.
