Ipswich Town’s 31-year-old could be available on the cheap in January.
Injury may have robbed Derby County of their primary transfer target, but Steve McClaren could do worse than to turn his attention to one of the league’s most consistent full-backs instead.
According to the Daily Record, The Rams were keen on beefing up their promotion bid with the signing of Scottish international right-back Callum Paterson before a cruciate ligament injury brought a premature end to any speculation, not to mention the 22-year-old’s season.
The blow leaves McClaren rather light at right-back as Derby aim to venture into the play-off positions in the coming weeks so it’s hard to believe his attention won’t have piqued when reports emerged linking Wolves with Ipswich Town’s Luke Chambers in January.
According to the Daily Mirror, Paul Lambert’s side are preparing a cut-price winter bid for the 31-year-old who out of contract in the summer.
However, while Wolves’ injury-stricken and out-of-form defence means Lambert will surely play hardball in his pursuit of a defender with desired experience and versatility, McClaren could well have the edge in a potential pursuit.
After all, he made Chambers captain during their short-lived spell together at Nottingham Forest in 2011/12 so a January reunion five years on would come as little surprise.
Equally adept at right-back or centre-half, the long-serving Ipswich defender could provide McClaren with vital options in the latter stages of the season as the former England boss looks to exercise the ghosts of his first spell and seal Premier League promotion at the third time of asking.
