Derby County recently announced their retained list for the upcoming season. The club have no first-team players on their way, but some of their under-23 players are on the way out.

One player who is leaving is 19-year-old striker Tom Mellors. The attacker signed his first professional contract with Derby last summer and that itself came as something of a surprise.

The teenager has battled with injury problems throughout the 2015-16 campaign, but Derby felt they had to see if he could find his form and fitness this term.

It seems he didn’t, with injuries again a major issue and he underwent surgery to alleviate his troubles earlier this spring.

Now the player has taken to Twitter and confirmed that not only are his days at Derby County numbered, but he is retiring from football.

He tweeted:

It is a massive shame for a young talent like Mellors to see their potential career swept out from underneath them but it seems his injury problems were far too severe to ever make it as a professional footballer.

No doubt all the Derby faithful will be wishing their former player asll the best in his future endeavours.
