Frank Lampard could be rivalled for the defender’s signature by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, a former teammate and TV colleague until his move to Ibrox this month.

New Derby County manager Frank Lampard could be rivalled by his former teammate and Glasgow Rangers counterpart Steven Gerrard for the signing of John Terry, according to bookmaker Sky Bet.

Derby are 5/4 – and favourites – to be Terry’s club after the defender left Aston Villa on Wednesday, with Rangers 7/1.

The 37-year-old spent the bulk of his career playing alongside close friend Lampard for both Chelsea and England, and won many of his 78 caps in the same team as Gerrard – who was hired by the Ibrox outfit earlier this month.

Lampard’s uncle, Harry Redknapp, has already identified Terry as a ‘nice fit’ for Derby, although it is Rangers who are arguably in greater need of a new centre-half, after the summer departures of David Bates and Russell Martin.

Rangers have been linked with moves for Martin Skrtel, Kyle Bartley and Connor Goldson in Terry’s position, however the transfer fees and salaries involved could make any of those deals difficult to complete.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

And while Gerrard’s men can sign Terry for free this summer, his wage demands – which are already said to have priced Aston Villa out of renewing his contract – could again prove prohibitive.

The former Chelsea captain is 6/1 to sign for any MLS club, with newly-promoted Fulham 10/1 fourth favourites.
