Derby County have been linked with a shock move for Garry Monk, after the Leeds United boss confirmed that talks over a new contract have yet to begin.

In his eight months at Elland Road, Monk has transformed Leeds from a bottom-half side into genuine promotion contenders, with a play-off place all but secured.

Derby found themselves in a similar position this time last season but, two managers on, are rapidly losing ground on the top six.

Had Monk been in charge of the Rams, the chances are they would still be in with a shout; Leeds recruits Pontus Jansson and Pablo Hernandez would be excelling in the white of Derby instead and Chris Martin never would have left, banging in the goals at a rate of Chris Wood.

Derby fans must be questioning why he isn’t, having been without a club when first Darren Wassall and then Nigel Pearson were asked to lead the Rams by chairman Mel Morris.

Sacked from his first job as manager of Swansea City, there was bound to be some apprehension from other clubs where Monk was concerned – although Leeds, to their credit, took the plunge and continue to be rewarded.

Perhaps he will remember that should Derby’s interest grow serious.
