Everton want to take advantage of Lukas Nmecha’s precarious contract situation at Man City – but Derby are waiting in the wings
Derby County are obviously feeling confident right now. Gary Rowett’s Rams are sitting pretty in sixth place and an impressive run of form could act as a precursor to one of the most ambitious transfer attempts of the season so far.
There is a very real chance that Lukas Nmecha could leave Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of this season. And The Sun claims that Derby are genuinely attempting to lure one of the most exciting young talents in English football to Pride Park.
18-year-old Nmecha is a huge talent, one of the jewels in City’s vaunted, £200 million academy. He has eight goals in six Premier League 2 games for the Under-23s this season and hit the winner for England at the Under-19 European Championships this summer.
Manager Pep Guardiola, who has a history when it comes to identifying young talent, clearly rates Nmecha highly – including him on the bench for City’s EFL Cup clash with Wolves in October.
So it’s fair to say Derby would be pulling off one hell of a coup if they managed to lure the teen sensation to the East Midlands.
They are up against it of course with a number of top flight clubs likely to be following developments closely. Everton are hoping to bring the striker, born to German and Nigerian parents, to Goodison Park as early as next month.
But with Derby’s supporters growing frustrated about the club’s underwhelming recruitment in recent seasons and raft of underperforming, big-money signings, a bargain swoop for the prodigious Nmecha would give them something to shout about for all the right reasons.
