Aston Villa and Derby County are both said to be interested in loan deals for the same Chelsea players in January.

Frank Lampard manager of Derby looks on during the Sky Bet Championship between Derby County and Swansea City at Pride Park Stadium on December 01, 2018 in Derby, England.

Derby County boss Frank Lampard’s comments to the Derby Telegraph about his side’s January transfer plans, could be bad news for Aston Villa.

Villa and Derby are in competition with each other for two loan targets from Chelsea, according to reports.

Villa and Derby both want Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi, according to the Birmingham Mail, and Lampard’s comments suggest that the young pair could well be on his side’s radar.

“We are not in a position where we can go and make dramatic movements in January, and I don’t think we need to but we are looking at the positions and looking at players who are available,” Lampard said.

“It probably will be loans if we are going to do something, and hopefully good ones. We will see.”

Villa now could be in competition with Derby to take the duo, and both clubs have strong links to Chelsea now.

Villa have John Terry as their assistant manager, while Derby obviously have Lampard in charge.

The Championship duo have also both had success in the loan market already this season.

Villa have taken Tammy Abraham from Chelsea and he has become their main forward, while Derby have utilised Mason Mount excellently during his time on loan from the Stamford Bridge club.

With Villa and Derby both fighting for promotion, winning the race for Hudson-Odoi or Ampadu could be crucial to their chances.
