Celtic have been dealt a blow in their plans to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers permanently from Tottenham Hotspur, with the Hoops having to pay £10m for the USA international.
According to the Daily Record, the fee to sign the defender from Spurs rises to eight figures when add-ons are included. The 23-year-old has been a key player for Celtic this season, with the Essex-born centre-back making 17 appearances in all competitions for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
At the time of the loan deal it was reported Celtic had an option to sign Carter-Vickers permanently from Spurs in summer 2022. However, it was believed the fee was well below the £10m now being reported.
While the centre-back did sign a one-year extension with Spurs before heading north to Glasgow, it’s unlikely the defender has much of a future with the north London club. So a price tag of £10m seems steep, to say the least.
With the USA star becoming a key man for Postecoglou, Celtic will no doubt be eager to make Carter-Vickers’ loan spell permanent in the summer. However, the finances involved could make the deal difficult.
While the Hoops can afford £10m for the defender, it would severely limit the number of players Celtic could sign to improve the squad in other positions.
Celtic fans rage over Carter-Vickers transfer fee

As you’d expect, Celtic supporters on social media aren’t happy with this news. The defender has established himself as one of the club’s key players in recent months.
There’s a chance the fee could be negotiated lower but, given Daniel Levy’s nous when dealing with transfers, Celtic fans won’t be counting their chickens.
