Newcastle United are reportedly in talks to bring Denzel Dumfries to the Premier League and his ‘incredible decline’ means Inter Milan may be forced to sell for a reduced fee, Nerazzuri legend Graziano Bini tells Tuttomercatoweb

In what has been a disappointing campaign for Simone Inzaghi’s side, Dumfries is becoming an unfortunate symbol of their malaise. One of Europe’s finest wing-backs last season, the Dutch international has not come close to matching those standards of late.

So much so that, according to Calciomercato, Inter are already hot on the heels of his replacement. Sporing director Piero Ausilio reportedly held a meeting with the agent of Club Brugge’s Canadian speedster Tajon Buchanan

Dumfries, meanwhile, is on Newcastle’s radar; Gazzetta dello Sport claiming that initial talks have already taken place. La Repubblica, meanwhile, believes that The Magpies are now the leading candidates to bring in a man who captained PSV Eindhoven before joining Inter during the summer of 2021.

“On Dumfries, I think he had an incredible decline,” says Bini, a Scudetto winner in 1980. “The Dutchman doesn’t seem like last year’s (player).

“This is also important when it comes to sales, because the offers won’t be the same.”

Inter value Dumfries at around £35 million. Should Newcastle win the race, the all-action 26-year-old would add some high-quality competition for an ageing Kieran Trippier, while giving Howe the opportunity to shift from a back-four to a back-three if required. Newcastle need all the depth they can get, too. European qualification will stretch a tight-knit squad to it’s limits.

Newcastle may opt to prioritise Ivan Fresneda instead, however; the Real Valladolid starlet ticking plenty of boxes for a club who, despite those Saudi Arabian billions, are still focused on rising stars rather than established talent.

Fresneda’s agent, however, has indicated that either Arsenal or Dortmund could be the 18-year-old’s eventual destination.

“(Arsenal and Dortmund) are two great clubs, about which we have favourable opinions. They give youngsters opportunities,” says Luis Bardaji, Fresneda’s representative.

Bardaji adds that there are ‘around 30 teams’ keen to sign the Spain U19 star.
