Ashley is reportedly keen to sell Newcastle, 11 years after taking full control of the club.
Dennis Wise told Jim White’s TalkSPORT show (10:59am, Wednesday) that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will only sell the club to the right buyer.
Ashley, who has had a controlling stake in Newcastle since buying out Freddy Shepherd in 2007, has stated that he is keen to sell the club in the near future.
Former Chelsea and Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon is reportedly heading up a consortium that is interested in purchasing Newcastle, but it is believed that their offer is about £100million short of Ashley’s £300million asking price.
Wise was brought to Newcastle in 2008 as an executive director of football between the board and playing staff, and is known for his close friendship with the much-loathed Ashley. He believes the club will be sold, if the right buyer comes in.
“I think he will sell it if it’s the right person,” Wise said. “I don’t think he will give it to someone who will strip the club, he’ll only hand it over to someone who is obviously going to take it in another direction and pile some money in and make it happen for Newcastle.”
Fans are desperate to see the back of Ashley after another disappointing transfer window, in which Rafa Benitez has failed to be backed by the Toon owner time after time.
Some how, Newcastle sit in 14th place, largely down to the impressive management of Benitez. They face Fulham on Saturday afternoon at St. James’ Park in a match they will be looking to win.
