Dennis Wise has told Sky Sports News (Monday, 3:35pm) that he believes Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks is just as good as Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, and is confident he can break back into the England squad.

Following England’s 2-1 loss to Spain, there has been plenty of debate over England’s missing link in the middle of the park – the kind of player that can take the ball off the back four and make something happen going forward.

Eric Dier and 28-year-old Jordan Henderson are currently considered too defensive by those discussing it, while Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard are too attacking. Pundits believe a player in between is what England lack.

Former Chelsea player Wise discussed whether Winks could be that man, and reckons with more experience and playing time at club level, he could reach the standard of Henderson as well as Spurs teammate Dier.

“He’s just as good as the likes of Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson, this boy,” Wise said. “He’s young, he’s enthusiastic and he can see a pass early and he breaks things up.

“He plays forward quickly, and that’s what you want from a player who is going to sit in front of your back four or back three. Unfortunately for him, he was so unlucky with the injuries, but he’s a player I would like to see more of.

“Further down the line, once he gets a lot more experience under his belt, I think he could be a player. Get in your team first, and then it pushes you in with a chance of getting into the national team.”

Chelsea's Dennis Wise and Graeme Le Saux applaud the crowd at the end of the match between Chelsea Legends and Inter Forever at Stamford Bridge on May 18, 2018 in London, England.

Winks has only managed six minutes of Premier League football this season across three appearances, with the likes of Dier, Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama vying for a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

England are next in action on Tuesday night as they face Switzerland in a friendly at the King Power Stadium, before Spurs face a hugely difficult test against Liverpool this weekend.
