Today marks a year since Tottenham Hotspur decided to part ways with boss Mauricio Pochettino, in a move that severely divided opinion.
Spurs had been in torrid form to start the 2019-20 season, and Daniel Levy decided to part ways with Pochettino after more than six years in charge.
Levy made an even bolder decision by hiring Jose Mourinho as his replacement, going with a tried-and-tested yet pragmatic winner over the generally more progressive Pochettino.
Many still don’t know what to make of Mourinho’s Tottenham; they’re grinding out results, but have endured a few disappointing displays of late.
Some Tottenham players were particularly upset by Pochettino’s departure, and midfielder Dele Alli was one of the most vocal.
On the night that Pochettino left Tottenham, Alli tweeted that he couldn’t thank Pochettino enough as he taught him so much.
Alli added that he hoped to see Pochettino again in the future, and who can rule that out given the way Alli’s Tottenham career is heading now.
The 24-year-old has started just one Premier League game under Mourinho this season, and that came on the opening day of the season against Everton.
Alli only played 139 minutes of action in October, and hasn’t played at all in November, with many now believing that he needs to leave Tottenham to salvage his career.
Playing at the European Championships now appears to be impossible with Alli struggling for playing time, and he surely didn’t see his fortunes turning out like this following Pochettino’s exit.
One year on, Alli may ultimately be heading the same way as Pochettino – out of Tottenham – and maybe the pair can reunite to get their careers back on track somewhere.
