Dele Alli has taken to Twitter to express his excitement ahead of Tottenham’s first first-team game inside their new stadium on Wednesday night in a message that is bound to resonate with a lot of Spurs supporters.

It is going to be a historic day for Mauricio Pochettino’s men. It has been a long time coming, but Crystal Palace’s visit tonight will mark the club’s first competitive fixture inside the magnificent arena after a couple of test events.

Putting the stadium opening to one side, it is still a hugely important game. Tottenham have lost four of their last five Premier League fixtures and will want to win to get their top four bid back on track heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

But of course, many fans will be focusing on opening the stadium in style when the Eagles visit. Roy Hodgson’s men will not make it easy, but Spurs, on paper, have a fantastic opportunity to ensure that it is a win that opens up the record books.

And for players like Alli, they may well be thinking about writing their own name in history by scoring the first competitive goal at the new stadium. Players such as Alli and Harry Kane are already well set to have their names included prominently in Spurs folklore anyway, but that opening goal in the club’s new home would certainly add to their future legacy.

So it is hardly surprising that the midfielder could not help but send a message on Twitter ahead of the curtain-raiser inside the new ground as the hours to kick-off count down.
