Tottenham Hotspur beat Liverpool to the signing of Dele Alli.

Danny Murphy has told Sky Sports that he believes Dele Alli is better off having joined Tottenham than if he signed for Liverpool.

Alli penned a new contract at Spurs yesterday taking him up until 2024, which will be nine years after he signed for the club in 2015.

Tottenham beat competition from a host of clubs to sign the midfielder from MK Dons at the time, with Brendan Rodgers telling The Mail his annoyance at Liverpool’s failure to sign him.

Murphy believes Alli is better off having joined Tottenham.

He said: “If he’d have gone to Liverpool, which he nearly did, I’m not convinced he’d have played as many games.

“Tottenham as a club deserve credit for giving him chances, and he’s said that.

“I don’t think there’s another big club in the top six where he could have gone and played as much as he has and thats the advantage.”

Murphy is right to commend Tottenham for giving Alli chances, but his comments about Liverpool are just speculative.

In the year Alli joined Tottenham in 2015, Steven Gerrard left the Reds to head abroad to MLS.

Alli certainly would have got his chances, and perhaps he would have saved Brendan Rodgers’ job.

Liverpool fans are probably happy in the reality than that alternate universe, with Jurgen Klopp since taking over and leading them to the Champions League final.
