Sheffield Wednesday are currently 16th in the Championship after back-to-back play-off finishes.
Sheffield Wednesday will not fall foul of the Football League’s Financial Fair Play rules this season, chairman Dejphon Chansiri told the Sheffield Star at Thursday’s fans forum at Hillsborough.
He warned, however, that Wednesday will ‘maybe have a problem next year’.
It suggests the Owls will be able to strengthen their squad, which could be missing as many as nine key players for Friday’s derby against Sheffield United, during the January transfer window.
Wednesday’s recruitment, over the past 18 months in particular, has been heavily criticised and Chansiri has admitted he is ‘disappointed in some’ of the players brought in last season.
Nevertheless, the Thai businessman went on to reveal he has no plans to change the Owls’ set up regarding transfers.
“Some clubs have directors of football – some have committees. We have a committee. I have many advisers. I listen more to the coach because he’s the one who manages the team.”
He added: “I hope this is the last time I explain it. Our recruitment team is still the same since the beginning. [The original transfer] committee didn’t help anything – they created more problems. Glenn Roeder didn’t bring in any players.
“When we have recruited, we thought [the signings] were the correct ones. When you recruit your staff and when you interview and look at everything, you believe they are good enough. We thought they were the best choice at the time.
“Sometimes the players we want, the club doesn’t want to sell or loan. So we had to look elsewhere.
“We are disappointed in some players we have brought. In the second year, they were not as good as we expected. We thought they were good and the fans were happy.”
Asked again about the future of Sheffield Wednesday Under-23 striker George Hirst, who has failed to appear for the Owls at any level this season after failing to sign a new contract, Chansiri reiterated: “I think he’s going to leave.”
Wednesday have yet to do any major deals this transfer window, with new boss Jos Luhukay having only started work on Monday.
