Celtic manager Ronny Deila says it’s unlikely that Shaun Maloney will return to the club this month.
Celtic manager Ronny Deila spoke to the press today, and as reported by STV, he admitted that a move to re-sign playmaker Shaun Maloney is likely to fail.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen but you never know in football,” said Deila, who recently admitted his interest in bringing Maloney back to Celtic for a third spell.
Maloney, 31, joined Celtic as a teenager back in 1999, and whilst he left for Aston Villa in January 2007, he was back with Celtic just 18 months later having struggled in the Premier League.
The next three years reaped 15 goals and 18 assists, and he was back off to the Premier League again, this time with Wigan Athletic, who he has been with for almost four years now.
Yet now, Maloney’s contract is set to expire this summer, which was spark mass interest in his signature, with Leicester City, Queens Park Rangers and even Chicago Fire interested in him, according to various reports.
Deila appeared to have given up on the hope of re-signing Maloney, with a playmaker potential on his transfer wish list amid speculation over the future of Kris Commons.
Whilst Maloney would be a superb addition for Deila, it seems that a move won’t be happening, which may leave Deila to look for other targets.
