‘Definitely’: Sky reporter claims ‘sensational’ player wants to join Arsenal

Arsenal haven’t been having much luck on the transfer front in January.

The Gunners have spent most of the window trying to coax Arthur Melo from Juventus but, with speculation slowing down, it remains to be seen if Mikel Arteta and Edu can get that one over the line.

And Bruno Guimarares, well Goal Brazil reported on Wednesday that Arsenal had been in talks to sign the Brazilian midfielder ever since last summer but the 24-year-old now looks set to join Newcastle United in what represents a big blow for the North Londoners.

Their midfield targets seem to be dwindling, but there’s still hope over one of them: Georginio Wijnaldum.

According to The Telegraph last week, Arsenal are winning the race to sign the struggling Paris Saint-Germain player.

And Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has claimed that the 31-year-old Netherlands international would like to join the Emirates Stadium outfit, revealing that Wijnaldum has a soft spot for the club.

He told Sky Sports News‘ transfer show: “What we’re being told is he would like to return to the Premier League.

“I’m not saying he wants to return today, this week or even in the summer, but he would like to return and we keep being told he would like to play for Arsenal. They’re a club he admired a lot when he was growing up. It’s definitely something that appeals to him.”

Sensational

Because of his struggles this season, Arsenal supporters might feel underwhelmed if the former Liverpool star joins.

However, it’s worth remembering that the Reds wanted to keep him at Anfield.

And manager Jurgen Klopp labelled him as ‘sensational‘ as recently as May and, honestly, that’s a good word.

Wijnaldum helped Liverpool to a Champions League and Premier League title in sucessive seasons, illustrating his pedigree.

Yes, he hasn’t proven a good signing by the Ligue 1 outfit – despite being free – but he is proven in the Premier League, unlike Arthur and Guimaraes and maybe, just maybe, their apparent failure to sign those first two targets could be a blessing in disguise.
