Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp has been discussing Steven Gerrard and the idea of him being a future Liverpool manager.
To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the biggest talking point ahead of Liverpool’s game against Aston Villa was Gerrard’s return to Anfield, and while Klopp said he wouldn’t answer any questions about the Reds’ former skipper, he was inevitably drawn into chatting about the Villa gaffer.
Klopp had nothing but good things to say about Gerrard, and, somewhat remarkably, he said that he expects him to be a future Liverpool manager.
What’s Klopp said about Gerrard?
Klopp was full of praise for the Villa manager.
“He’s done incredible and smart stuff. He started here with the U18s, then took his stuff to Rangers where he was very successful, and so now he is ready for everything. I’m not surprised about it, but when we met then I didn’t think about it. It’s not easy for a world-class player to become an outstanding manager, but it’s possible, and it looks like Stevie has all the skills you need,” Klopp said.
Klopp was then asked if he thinks Gerrard will get the Liverpool job in the future.
“Oh yeah. Yes, I think, absolutely. The only problem is, when is the right moment for that? That’s not about Stevie but we saw that with Frank (Lampard) at Chelsea,” Klopp said.
“He’s very young still from a manager’s point of view, so it’s just about the right moment to take the job. How long does he want to do it? Is this the last job he does? The first job? The second, the third? These are questions I cannot answer, but I think it will definitely happen.”

Foregone conclusion
Gerrard will be the Liverpool manager one day, that much seems obvious.
He’s a club legend, he’s loved by the fans and he’s proving himself to be a fantastic young manager.
The only question is, when will he take the job?
Klopp’s contract is up in 2024, is that the right time for Gerrard? Time will tell, but whether it’s in three years, five years or 10 years, it seems inevitable that Stevie G will be returning to Anfield.
