Well, Leeds United don’t have long to wait to avenge their worst result of last season.
It was a brilliant return to the Premier League for Leeds last term as Marcelo Bielsa’s side, competing in the top flight for the first time since 2004, finished ninth in the table.
But one major low point was their 6-2 humiliation away to Manchester United.
The trip to Old Trafford will be probably the first fixture that a lot of Leeds fans look for when the matches are announced.
And they didn’t have far to scroll this morning when the 2021-22 fixture list was revealed.
That’s because first up for Leeds is a visit to Manchester United on August 14 – and here’s how managing director Angus Kinnear reacted via BBC West Yorkshire Sport.
He said: “I think it proves that the fixture computer is definitely a myth and that someone at Premier League HQ has a sense of humour. But, it is a great game to start with. It is one of the few performances last season where we didn’t do ourselves justice, I don’t think so. I’m sure Marcelo and the boys are going to be delighted to have that as the first crack and put that right.”
Revenge?
A lot of Leeds fans will be excited by next season but it’s important to be realistic.
The second season is often quite a lot harder for newly-promoted clubs who dazzled during their first season.
Sheffield United are in the Championship now after being relegated last term, 12 months after finishing ninth – where Leeds finished last month.
It’s worth pointing out that Bielsa’s side stood toe to toe with the Premier League’s best teams and beat them, which means it’s hugely unlikely that they won’t be a force again next time around.
And a win at Old Trafford on the opening day would really set the tone for more of the same for the Whites.
