Newcastle United’s Ayoze Perez celebrates scoring their second goal
Several Newcastle United players have taken to Twitter to celebrate the Magpies’ stunning win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium that saw them move back to the top of the Championship on Tuesday night.
It appeared for 80 minutes that the Seagulls were going to consolidate their position at the summit as they went into the final 10 minutes 1-0 up following Glenn Murray’s penalty after just 14 minutes.
However, Rafa Benitez’s men managed to turn the game on its head. Firstly, Mohamed Diame equalised for the away side when Christian Atsu’s seemingly wayward shot managed to catch the former Hull man’s heel around 12 yards out before somehow looping into the net to the surprise of everyone, including Diame himself it seems.
But they were not happy settling for a point as, once again, Atsu was the man to create what turned out to be the winner – though clearly, unlike the first, this assist was intentional – as he squared the ball for Ayoze Perez, who calmly found the net with just seconds of the 90 minutes still to play.

Newcastle now go two points clear at the top of the table, and, perhaps more importantly, have an eight-point cushion to third place Huddersfield, who, admittedly, still have a game in hand over the Magpies.
Unsurprisingly, a number of players – including a few who were not even involved in the game – took to social media to comment on the victory, with Rolando Aarons perhaps best summing the win up by suggesting that it could be a season-defining moment for the club in their quest for automatic-promotion.
