Graeme Souness has said on talkSPORT (10:08am, September 26, 2022) that Liverpool and England international right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has “deficiencies” in his defending.
However, the Liverpool legend believes that England head coach Gareth Southgate has to include Alexander-Arnold in his squad for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
Souness made the comments about the Liverpool star in the wake of Southgate leaving him out of the England squad against Germany for the UEFA Nations League game on Monday evening.
According to The Times this morning, Alexander-Arnold will not be involved in England’s match against Germany this evening.
The 23-year-old did not play against Italy at San Siro in the UEFA Nations League last Friday either.

Liverpool legend Souness believes that Alexander-Arnold could do better defensively and may not be in a position to start for England at the World Cup finals, but he thinks that Southgate should include him in his squad for Qatar.
Graeme Souness on Liverpool and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold
Souness said about Alexander-Arnold: “I think he has got some deficiencies when it comes to defending, but what he gives going forward far outweighs that.
“In saying that, I think to win in football, you have to start a game believing you are going to play the very best of what team you are playing against, so in that sense, you may start with a better defender, but you have got to involve Trent in your World Cup squad.”
World Cup spot
In our view, England head coach Gareth Southgate will include Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in his 2022 World Cup squad for Qatar.
He simply has to.
And he will.
Yes, Alexander-Arnold needs to do better defensively, but Southgate will be well aware of that.
Maybe the England head coach is not using the Liverpool star now because he knows already what he can and cannot do.
