Despite claiming he was on the verge of signing for Arsenal just over a year ago, Stoppila Sunzu has now agreed a move to Sochaux.
It was just over a year ago that Stoppila Sunzu claimed he was on the verge of signing for Arsenal.
The Zambia international – who had recently been part of the triumphant Africa Cup of Nations team – was quoted as saying, “I will be travelling to England to sign a deal with Arsenal after the friendly game against Tanzania.
“As we speak, Mr Katumbi’s (his then-club chairman) personal consultant Salomon Eskadela is here in Zambia waiting to travel with me to England.
“I spoke to both Mr Katumbi and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who assured me that I would not be going to London for trials but to discuss personal terms and possibly sign a contract.”
Despite such detailed plans, the contract never came, and a reported deal to play for Reading would also later fall through.
And now, the 24-year-old centre-back has reunited with his former international coach Herve Renard at French club Sochaux, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Speaking after the move, Sunzu said, “Sochuax is not my dream move. It is a stepping stone for me to go to play in the English league.”
So perhaps he may one day turn out at the Emirates Stadium after all.
