Darren Bent has claimed that ‘deep down inside’ Callum Wilson will be ‘fuming’ that he didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet during Newcastle United’s 5-1 win against Brentford, as he told Premier League Productions (10/10/22 at 2:35 pm).

The former Sunderland striker claimed that Wilson is such an ‘integral’ figure to how Eddie Howe’s side play, but he would have felt down at not scoring over the weekend.

That’s probably a sign of a typical striker, but whilst Wilson didn’t add his name to Bruno Guimaraes’, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron’s, he did supply an assist.

It was a rampant display from the home team and another sign that the Magpies are going places under this new ownership.

It’s not just this season that Newcastle have been on fire, but ever since the turn of the year, they have been one of the top sides in the country.

Nonetheless, when speaking about Wilson not getting on the scoresheet against Brentford, this is what Bent had to say.

“Someone like Callum Wilson gives them that different dimension,” said Bent. “He didn’t score at the weekend. I know deep down inside, he is fuming. You score five and you don’t get one.

“But he’s so integral to what they do.”

ENGLAND CHARGE

Wilson has been outstanding for Newcastle in recent times, but whenever there is an international break, he seems to get injured.

That proved to be the case during the most recent international, which just sums up the luck, or lack of it, the former Bournemouth man has.

Ivan Toney, who scored from the penalty spot at the weekend, earned his maiden call by Gareth Southgate last time out, with his hat-trick against Leeds providing him with that helping hand, but he didn’t earn any minutes.

Has Wilson’s time run out because he wasn’t part of the last squad before the main group of players will be announced next month?

It might just be a case that Tammy Abraham pushes ahead of Wilson simply because he has more credit in the bank and Southgate hasn’t seen the Newcastle man up, close and personal for a while.
