Troy Deeney has stated on TalkSport (21/10/20 at 7:20 am) that you ‘always’ need ‘good football people’ around you like Aston Villa coach Craig Shakespeare.
Whilst Deeney understands that Villa’s 100% start to the season isn’t just down to the recently-appointed backroom member, he did point out how well the club is now doing since his summer arrival.
Shakespeare was a member of Nigel Pearson’s backroom staff last season before they were all surprisingly sacked during restart, which in the end, pushed them towards relegation and helped Villa survive.
During his time at Watford, Deeney has been used to working with a large number of coaches and he shared his thoughts on the ones who should have been given more time.
“I think the club [Watford] has been on record to say that Nigel Pearson was a bit of a mistake in terms of getting rid of him,” Deeney told TalkSport. “We did really well. I thought that was one.
“Obviously, Shaky [Shakespeare] has gone to Villa and look at how well they are doing. So, not all Shaky, obviously, but people like that who are good football people are always needed around a club.”
In truth, Shakespeare has perhaps been a bit of an unsung hero in Villa’s rise to surviving on the last day of last season and now sitting second in the Premier League table.
He was part of that Leicester City side that famously shocked the world and won the Premier League title, not forgetting that the season before the Foxes had survived relegation, just like Villa, by the skin of their teeth.
