It is clear that West Bromwich Albion need to bring in a new striker before the transfer window closes, but it is questionable whether the club have identified the correct player as they seek to address that issue.

West Brom have mustered just 19 goals in the Premier League this season, while Jay Rodriguez is their top scorer across all competitions having found the net on four occasions.

Salomon Rondon, who has regularly led the line for West Brom this campaign, hasn’t been effective enough as he has scored only three times.

As reported by BBC Sport, West Brom have identified Watford striker Troy Deeney as one of their main targets in the closing stages of the window.

However, despite possessing much experience and being a strong physical presence, Deeney surely wouldn’t be the solution to West Brom’s goalscoring struggles, especially when it’s taken into consideration that he’s scored twice in 15 Premier League games this season.

To put Deeney’s goalscoring exploits into wider context, he has scored 25 times in 90 Premier League appearances.

That may be a marginally better return than Rondon has mustered, with the latter having scored 20 times in 94 games, but Deeney still isn’t prolific enough to be considered as a genuine option who can play a major part in saving West Brom from relegation.
