Dedryck Boyata went from villain to…..slightly less of a villain for Celtic on Sunday.

The linked-away Belgium international scored the only goal of the game as Celtic beat Hamilton 1-0 at Parkhead.

Boyata was a surprise inclusion in Brendan Rodgers’s first XI by virtue of the fact that he reportedly refused to play in Champions League and Europa League qualifiers this month.

Some home fans unfurled a banner which read ‘Boyata – not fit to wear the jersey’.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old wound up being a match-winner but despite being responsible for those three points, some Celtic supporters on Instagram didn’t react well to his post-match message, though others were supportive.

Collective win tonight, congratulations to all the team!

Here’s how some fans responded:

kylemcgreevy: Stop being a snake

neil_mcquillan: Wonder if your agent wrote this since he seems to do everything else for you

mark_kennedy_: Rat

melfiegreen: Dirty Judas

finlayy_m: Welcome back

matthew.m.14: YASSSS

daniel_lodhi__: Keep your head high your our best defender by far we need you Hail Hail

celtgram: Sorry for the banner, it wasn’t meant for you so don’t leave

According to Voetbalkrant, Valencia are the latest club to show interest in the former Manchester City defender, who was the subject of a failed £9 million bid by Fulham earlier this month.

The fact that the Celtic boss selected him yesterday means very little, because he could still go, but it is probably better for the Hoops if he stays.

Angling aside, he is Celtic’s best centre-back and Rodgers needs someone of Boyata’s qualities all season as Rangers look to knock them off their perch.
