Boyata has been accused of refusing to play for Celtic.
The saga surrounding Dedryck Boyata’s future at Celtic has taken another twist after the defender looked to prove to fans that he does indeed have an injury that is preventing him from playing against AEK Athens on Tuesday night.
Boyata, 27, has entered the final year of his contract at Celtic, but has reportedly refused to enter negotiations over a renewal with Brendan Rodgers’ side amid interest from Europe’s top leagues.
The Daily Record claim Celtic rejected a £9million offer from Fulham before the English window shut last week, while Spanish giants Sevilla and Italian outfit Lazio are keen on landing the Belgian World Cup defender.
It has been claimed that Boyata has refused to travel with Celtic to face AEK, claiming injury. The defender has now taken to Instagram in a bid to prove that he is still looking to build his fitness back up, and has pledged his support to the club.
Boyata is currently earning £14,000 a week at Celtic (Daily Star), but that contract expires on May 31 and the former Manchester City powerhouse will be allowed to talk to non-Scottish clubs on a pre-contract basis from January 1.
The defender’s actions have since seen Chris Sutton describe the defender as “a disgrace” in reaction to claims he is refusing to play and unwilling to renew his contract.
Even Scotland assistant manager James McFadden urged Celtic to offload the defender, stating that it would be beneficial for the club to cash in on him now rather than risk losing him on a free next summer.
