Dedryck Boyata and Scott Allan started for Celtic last night, at least one person thought.

Switzerland is home of the Matterhorn and someone at St Gallen is obviously living under quite a big rock, based on a perplexing gaffe when Celtic came to town on Tuesday night.

Neil Lennon’s side played out a 0-0 draw with the Swiss side in what was their last pre-season friendly before embarking on the journey toward the Champions League group stages next week.

It’s always difficult to guess what XI a manager fields during a friendly but no Celtic fan alive would have expected to see Dedryck Boyata and Scott Allan on the team sheet, and yet they were.

Both players left Parkhead this summer, but the person who compiled the team sheets for media personnel inside the stadium bizarrely named the departed duo in Lennon’s first XI.

Maryan Shved and Mikey Johnston were the two players omitted by the St Gallen staff member.

It’s difficult to even know how such a mistake was made, by virtue of the fact that Celtic released the real lineup on Twitter, an hour before the game.

Either the person responsible was struggling with altitude sickness, or they’re a Rangers fan on a wind-up.
