West Ham United star Declan Rice has explained on Twitter why he is not playing for his team against Southampton this afternoon.

The Hammers will take on Southampton at the London Stadium in the Premier League.

Rice is an important player for the Hammers, and the 20-year-old – who can operate as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder – was expected to start for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

The England international is not in the team, and the youngster has explained on Twitter why – he is ill.

West Ham’s season is pretty much over, but the Hammers will be determined to pick up maximum points against Southampton and end the season strongly.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the London club, but one positive from this season has been the performances of Rice.

According to WhoScored, Rice has made 33 appearances in the Premier League for West Ham this season, scoring two goals in the process.

West Ham’s final game of the Premier League season is against Watford away from home at Vicarage Road.
