Glasgow Rangers defender Declan John has looked impressive since arriving at Ibrox on loan in the summer.

When Rangers announced in the summer that they had landed Declan John on a season-long loan, Gers fans would have been forgiven for scratching their heads slightly with club captain Lee Wallace occupying John’s favoured position of left-back.

But, based on how the Cardiff City man has started life at Ibrox, it appears that Wallace may face a fight to get back into the team once he returns from injury.

The 30-year-old has not played since limping off 12 minutes in to Rangers’ Scottish Premiership clash with Partick Thistle in mid-September, and BBC Sport reported shortly after that he was set to spend the next two months on the sidelines due to a groin injury.

Though John has faced his own battle with injury since coming in, the 22-year-old has generally impressed and proved to be the catalyst for the turnaround against Hamilton on Friday night after the Light Blues found themselves a goal down.

The defender scored twice, including a stunning finish from outside the box for the first before showing his attacking intent to put the Gers in front as he darted down the line before cutting into the box and drilling his shot into the net.

Should John continue to impress while Wallace remains sidelined once the domestic season resumes following the international break, it could certainly be argued that there should be serious questions about whether the latter does come back into the team, as John’s early form confirms that he has not moved to Ibrox to simply be Wallace’s understudy.
