Rangers defender Wallace’s future at Ibrox remains in doubt.
Rangers defender Declan John has suggested to the Daily Record that he wants Steven Gerrard’s side to keep Lee Wallace at the club – despite the left-back missing the club’s trip to Andalucia.
Wallace, 30, was suspended by the club earlier in the season after a dressing room debacle with manager Graeme Murty, which also saw veteran Kenny Miller serve a suspension.
Miller’s contract at Ibrox has since expired, while Wallace remains on the books with a year left on his contract. However, his future remains doubtful after missing the squad’s training camp in Spain.
Asked about captain Wallace, Wales international John said he wants competition for the left-back role in Gerrard’s starting eleven – with Wallace currently considered the club’s second best left-sided defender.
“I would like more competition. You need two or three players all fighting for that one spot. It makes everyone better as a player and as a team,” John said.
“I felt I did well at left-back last season but I offer a lot more because I can play two or three different positions. I had to wait for my chance and as soon as it comes I have to take it.”
Last season, John made 31 league and cup appearances for Rangers, in which he had a hand in seven goals for the Scottish giants including three of his own and four assists.
It even saw John recalled to the Wales squad by Ryan Giggs, and he featured against the likes of Mexico in LA. He will be hoping to impress Gerrard ahead of the club’s Europa League qualifier on July 12.
