Charlie Woods might not be playing in the US Open at Shinnecock, but he’s played his part in the event already.
The 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods was on the bag for his friend, amateur Miles Russel, during US Open qualifying, and Russell qualified for the US Open alongside Woods at BallenIsles Country Club.
It was an incredible accomplishment from one of the most talented young stars in the game. And when he was asked if Woods would be on his bag at Shinnecock for his first major championship appearance, he said he’d have to ask if Woods was available.
Less than a week before the start of the US Open, Russell has made his decision on who will caddie for him at the toughest test in golf.

Charlie Woods will not caddie for Miles Russell at the US Open
Despite Russell’s comments after qualifying for the US Open, he has decided that Woods will not caddie for him at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills. Instead, his coach, Ramon Bescansa, will take on that responsibility.
As cool as it would have been to see Woods make an appearance at the US Open, this is probably a sensible call from Russell. A US Open at Shinnecock Hills has proven to be the single most difficult challenge a golfer can face.

They both finished T12 at Memorial this past week
Only three players have finished a US Open under par at Shinnecock in the last 100 years, so to avoid total embarrassment, Russell needs someone with experience on the bag.
41-year-old Bescansa is more likely to be a steady hand when the going gets tough at Shinnecock than Woods would have been, despite the fun he and Russell had together in qualifying.
