DeAndre Yedlin made his first start for Newcastle United in the 2-0 EFL Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United right-back DeAndre Yedlin told BBC Radio Newcastle that he’s delighted to be able to link up with a ‘great’ player like Matt Ritchie down the right flank.

The former Spurs man lined up with Ritchie in the 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night and is hoping it will be the start of a successful partnership for the Magpies.

The Scottish international scored one and assisted Yoan Gouffran as Newcastle claimed a comfortable victory over the side that had beaten them by the same scoreline in the Championship just three days earlier.

Ritchie signed from Bournemouth for £12m during the summer transfer window and has made an impressive start to his United career after being awarded the club’s player of the month for August following a string of classy displays down the right.

And Yedlin feels his right-sided partner will help him get used to things as he looks set for a run of starts following Vurnon Anita’s suspension.

“Playing with Ritchie on my side is a big help, he’s quality,” the 23-year-old told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“He just controls the game so well and he’s a guy that if you’re in trouble you can play the ball to him and he’ll find a way out.

“So he’s a great player to play with and he obviously got a great goal and a quality ball into (Yoan Gouffran) and Gouff got another quality volley.”

Yedlin is expected to start alongside Ritchie this Saturday as Newcastle look to get back to winning ways in the Championship at Aston Villa (5.30pm kick-off).
