Newcastle United recorded a hugely memorable win on Wednesday.
Speaking to his club’s official website, DeAndre Yedlin has described Newcastle United’s come-from-behind 4-3 win over Norwich as “pretty incredible”, but acknowledged the need to improve defensively.
The Magpies looked set to lose at St James’s Park last night when Jacob Murphy scored with 20 minutes left to put the Canaries 3-1 ahead.
However, Rafael Benitez’s side pulled out a miracle in the final 20 minutes as two goals from Dwight Gayle to complete his hat-trick, either side of an injury-time equaliser from Yoan Gouffran, gave United a very memorable victory over City.
But when the dust settles, there may be an inquest from Benitez as to how and why his side shipped three goals in the first place.
And right-back Yedlin agrees that they simply must improve as a defensive unit, even if the victory did illustrate how much character this Newcastle side have.
“It’s pretty incredible. Obviously we’ve got to do better defensively I think, but it was great that we took our chances and never quit,” he told the club’s website.
“The crowd really got behind us and helped push us on which was really good, and we’re very happy with the three points.”
This was not against Championship fodder who will do well to avoid relegation.
It was against a team who, like United, were relegated from the Premier League; against a side who will be battling for promotion – or so they hope – come April and May, so it was a big statement by Benitez’s boys.
