DeAndre Yedlin has told the Shields Gazette that it is “unbelievable” to play under Newcastled United boss Rafael Benitez.

The United States defender joined Newcastle in a £5 million move from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

He has gone on to make five Championship appearances for the Magpies and although three of these were from the bench, Yedlin isn’t concerned due to the amount of games left in England’s second tier this season.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old, who was playing MLS with Seattle Sounders before 2015, is delighted with his move to the North-East and is particularly chuffed with playing under the Spanish manager, who won the Champions League in 2005.

“Especially as a younger player, this league is great as there is so many games,” he said to the Shields Gazette. “It’s a great move for me to come here, and working under Rafa has been unbelievable.”

The right-back spent last season on loan at Newcastle’s rivals Sunderland, but United fans will forgive and forget so long as he puts in 100% every week, or every time he plays.

If he plays a big role in helping the club win promotion, even better. But so far so good for the Magpies, who sit third in the Championship, three points behind high-flying Huddersfield Town.
