Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin has revealed to The Chronicle that he held talks with Sunderland in the summer transfer window.

Yedlin, who can play as a right-back or a wide midfielder, spent the 2015-16 season on loan at Sunderland from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The USA international joined Championship club Newcastle on a five-year contract in the summer transfer window.

According to The Daily Mail, the Magpies had to pay Spurs a transfer fee of £5 million in order to secure the services of the 23-year-old.

Yedlin has revealed that he did hold talks with Sunderland before deciding to switch to Newcastle.

“There were talks (with Sunderland) but it never really got to that final stage,” Yedlin told The Chronicle. “That wasn’t really an option and when Newcastle became involved I took that opportunity. It was never a choice between the clubs.”

Yedlin is a good defender and showed during the 2015-16 campaign that he is good enough to play in the Premier League.

The former Seattle Sounders FC player was never really given a chance to shine at Spurs, and the American should prove to be a good signing for Newcastle.

Rafael Benitez’s side are aiming to finish in the top two of the Championship this season and gain automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
