Newcastle United are top of the Championship by three points.

DeAndre Yedlin has told The Chronicle that a win feels like a loss for Newcastle United if the victory in question is not as convincing as the players would like it to be.

Newcastle beat Cardiff City 2-1 on Saturday to stay top of the Championship, three points clear of second-placed Brighton and eight ahead of Huddersfield Town back in third.

As predicted, England’s second tier is proving something of a cakewalk for the Magpies – who have won their last seven league games – as promotion back into the Premier League seems to be on the cards for Rafael Benitez’s troops.

And Yedlin’s latest comments more or less sum up United’s approach.

The USA international has suggested in The Chronicle that victory is not even enough for Newcastle anymore, claiming he and his team-mates are “upset” if the wins don’t come easy.

They have won their last two league games by a 2-1 margin, in games where they could perhaps be guilty of taking their foot off the pedal a little, and Yedlin has bizarrely said that both wins felt like defeats due to the narrow manner of securing the three points.

“We have to keep going. These type of wins feel like losses now because we know we should not let it get to the point it got to.

“That’s a good thing. We’re upset about wins now too if we don’t think we did everything right.

“We’ll take a narrow win, but we want to control games a lot better. There will be games when you win 1-0 but you control things.”

Newcastle fans will not know whether to feel happy or worried about Yedlin’s admission. There is nothing wrong with high standards, but the Championship is notoriously difficult and the reality of the situation is that they will not smash four or five goals past every team on a weekly basis.

They travel to in-form Leeds United after the international break, and if the ex-Sunderland man feels that a simple win is on the cards there then he may have another thing coming.
